I would like to welcome everyone to my first ever posting for online stepping stones, today’s article is going to be dedicated to DNS records and most importantly Checking everything before you think the job is completed, you will understand more below; but firstly I would like to quickly provide everyone with a quick history of why online stepping stones was created.

Online stepping stones, was originally setup by a couple of like minded experts who wanted to provide developers with access to affordable online resources.  We specialise in sourcing items such as domain registration, affordable hosting solutions, marketing and design and finally search engine optimisation packages.

Ok, so now with all that out of the way we can get straight into the post; we received a phone call this very morning from a company that was really concerned that their website had been attacked, it was pointing at a strange website and nobody knew what had happened.

So online stepping stones to the rescue; having a little knowledge of the company in question my first question was; has anyone tried to change anything relating to the DNS?  The dreaded reply came “YES, this weekend we changed the name servers for the domain”.

Now the first thing that came into my mind was, something most have went wrong but I was hoping that it wouldn’t require a complete domain redirection.  So I started investigating and soon discovered the problem; I found that they had two full sets of DNS records.

The first domain registration record was pointing at the domain registration company’s site in construction page, when I first glanced at the page I automatically thought that it looked like a full site.  The domain registration companies are getting very smart at making money because I am assuming that they had somehow read the Meta tags and then deployed a full site full of affiliate links relating to this service.  Very cleaver?

Back to the problem which was created by an individual who will forever remain nameless.  He changed the name servers but forgot to delete the default settings that were automatically created by the domain registration company.  He did add all the new domain settings but forgot to check his work.

So the moral of the store is to check and double check everything, the individual in this story had nearly 8 years experience and had done this type of thing a million and one times before but this time he made a mistake that cost this company half a day’s profits because they had to wait for the domain name to be redirected.

In later articles I will be explaining the exact configuration options that most domain registration companies provide; so hopefully with my help you won’t make the same mistake as above.
